On Sunday, August 17, 2025, the faithful of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church gathered at St. Leon Ghevontiants Armenian Cathedral to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the Diocesan Primate, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, who led the faithful in prayer and thanksgiving as they honored the sacred memory of St. Mary, the Holy Mother of God. The Cathedral was filled with devotion and reverence, as clergy and laity came together to celebrate one of the most beloved feasts of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The Feast of the Assumption holds profound meaning in the life of the Armenian faithful. Beyond commemorating the Mother of God’s heavenly assumption, it serves as a spiritual call for all mothers to look to St. Mary as a model of humility, devotion, and love. Archbishop Derderian, in his message to the faithful, emphasized that the life of St. Mary continues to inspire Christian families, reminding them of the sacred role of mothers in nurturing faith, strengthening families, and guiding future generations.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the traditional blessing of the grapes was performed, symbolizing the first fruits of the harvest offered to God. Archbishop Derderian, joined by the diocesan clergy, blessed the baskets of grapes brought forward by the faithful. Following the blessing, the grapes were reverently distributed to the congregation, marking a joyous conclusion to a spiritually uplifting day.
The Feast of the Assumption at St. Leon Cathedral was not only a commemoration of the Holy Mother of God but also a celebration of faith, family, and the enduring traditions of the Armenian Church.
